The Kidneys And Homeostasis Flashcards
What do kidneys act as?
Filters to clean the blood.
Name the three main roles the kidneys perform?
- Removal of urea from the blood.
- Adjustment of ions on the blood.
- Adjustment of water content of the blood.
What can’t be stored by the body?
Proteins.
What are excess amino acids converted into, and why are they converted?
They are converted into fats and carbohydrates, which allows them to be stored in the body.
Where does this reaction take place?
In the liver.
What wade product is produced from this reaction?
Urea.
What is bad about urea?
It is poisonous. It is released into the bloodstream by the liver.
What do the kidneys do?
The kidneys filter it out of the blood and it is temporarily stored in the bladder in urine and excreted from the body.
How are excess ions removed?
By the kidneys.
How are ions lost?
Through sweat
How is water lost through the body?
Urine
Sweat
In air we breath out
What is the water balance between?
Liquids consumed
Amount sweated out
Amount excreted by the kidneys in urine.
What happens to the colour of your urine on a cold day?
It will be pale and dilute
What happens to the colour if your urine on a hot day?
It will be more concentrated and dark coloured (as less water is in it)
What do sports drinks replace?
Lost water, sugar and ions
