Circulatory System - The Heart Flashcards
What is the circulatory systems main function?
To get food and oxygen into every cell in the body, and carry waste products to where they can be removed from the body.
How many circulatory systems do humans have?
1 but there are 2 circuits joined together.
What is blood without oxygen called?
Deoxygenated blood.
Where is the deoxygenated blood pumped to in the body?
It’s pumped to the lungs to take in oxygen.
Once the deoxygenated blood takes oxygen from the lungs where does it return to?
The heart.
What is the name of blood with oxygen in it?
Oxygenated blood.
Where does the oxygenated blood get pumped to?
Around all the other organs in the body.
Where does the oxygenated blood give up its oxygen to?
At the body cells.
Once the oxygenated blood has given up all its oxygen where does it return to?
The heart to be pumped out to the lungs again.
How does the heart pump blood around the body?
It contracts.
What are the walls of the heart mostly made of?
Muscle tissue.
What is the job of the valves in the heart?
To make that the blood goes in the right direction, they prevent it flowing backwards.
Name the four chambers in the heart?
Right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium and left ventricle.
How does blood flow into the two atria?
From the vena cava and the pulmonary vein.
Which side is the vena cava found on?
The right side of the heart.
