Circulation Aids Flashcards
What can artificial blood do in emergency’s?
Keep you alive.
What is artificial blood made of?
A salt solution (saline).
What is the artificial blood used to replace?
It is used to replace the lost volume of blood.
Is artificial blood safe?
Yes, as long as no air bubbles get into the blood.
What does artificial blood give patients enough time to do?
The artificial blood gives patients enough time to produce new blood cells.
What happens if the artificial blood can’t replace the functions of red blood cells?
Then a blood transfusion is needed.
Does a blood transfusion have any dangers?
Yes there is a problems with side effects.
What can he heart be repaired with?
Artificial parts.
What are artificial hearts?
Mechanical devices that are used to pump blood around a person if their own heart fails.
What’s an advantage of a artificial heart?
It is less likely to be rejected by the body’s immune system than donor hearts. This is because there made from metals or plastics so the body doesn’t recognise them as foreign and attack them like it does with living tissue.
Name 2 disadvantages of artificial hearts?
Surgery to fit an artificial heart can lead to bleeding.
They don’t work as well as natural ones - parts of the heart could wear out or the electrical motor could fail.
Blood doesn’t flow through artificial hearts as smoothly which which can cause blood clots and lead to strokes.
What does the patient have to do when they have an artificial heart?
They have to take drugs to thin their blood and make sure this doesn’t happen, which can cause problems with bleeding if they’re hurt in an accident.
What is coronary heart disease?
When the arteries that supply the blood to the muscle of the heart get blocked by fatty deposits.
Why does this cause the arteries to become?
Narrow and blood flow is restricted - this can result in a heart attack.
What are stents and what do they do?
They are tubes that are inserted inside arteries, this keeps them open making sure blood can pass through to the heart muscles.
