The Breathing System Flashcards
Where do you get oxygen from and where do you need to get it to?
You get oxygen from the air and you need to get it to your bloodstream.
What do your cells need oxygen?
Your cells need to be supplied with oxygen for respiration.
What part of your body are your lungs in?
The thorax.
Where is the thorax?
The thorax is the top part of your body.
What separates the thorax from the lower part of the body?
The diaphragm.
What are the lungs protected by?
The ribcage.
Where does the air you breathe in go through?
The air that you breathe in goes through the trachea.
What does the tranches then split into?
The trachea then splits into two tubes called the bronchi.
What is each tube called?
A bronchus.
Where does each bronchus go?
Each bronchi leads to each lung.
What does the bronchi then split into?
The bronchi then split into progressively smaller tubes called the bronchioles.
What do the bronchioles lead to?
The alveoli.
What are the alveoli and what happens in them?
Alveoli are small bags where gas exchange takes place.
Define ventilation?
Ventilation is the movement of air into and out of the lungs.
What happens to the intercostal muscles and the diaphragm when a person breathes in?
They contract, the diaphragm flattens out.
What happens to the volume and pressure in the thorax and lungs?
The volume in the thorax increases which means that the pressure inside the lungs decreases which draws air in because the lungs get bigger.
What happens to the intercostal muscles and the diaphragm when a person breaths out?
They relax which cause the diaphragm to move up.
What happens to the volume and pressure when a person breaths out?
The thorax volume decreases which causes an increase in pressure in the lungs so air is forced out.
What do artificial ventilators do?
They help people breath, often people who can’t breath by themselves.
What does the ventilation machine do?
The machine moves air into and out of the lungs.
What was the iron lung?
The iron lung was a giant case from the neck to the abdomen. Air was pumped into the case to help the person breath.
What happens if air was pumped out of the case?
The lungs expanded so pressure dropped
