Water Flashcards
Bonding - water
COVALENT
Negative electrons aren’t shared equally by the atom of differnent elements
Slightly positive hydrogen s and slightly negative oxygen - called POLAR molecules, regions of positivity and negativity
What is hydrogen bonding
Electrostatic attraction between a slightly positive hydrogen atom and slightly negative oxygen atom of another
Properties of water?
High boiling point Less dense when it freezes Cohesive Adhesive Solvent
High boiling point -water property
Water is a Liquid at room temperature
Hydrogen bonding = takes a LOT of energy to increase the temperature of water and cause it to evaporate
Less dense when it freezes - property of water
Because of hydrogen bonds
After 4 degree , hydrogen bonds fix the positions of the polar molecules slightly futher apart than the average distance in the liqui d state = giant , open and rigid structure
Every oxygen atom in the centre of a arrangement of hydrogen atoms
Property of water - adhesive and cohesive
Cohesive -moves as one mass because the molecules are attracted to each other
Adhesive -water molecules are attracted to other materials
Why can water be a solvent ?
Because it s polar
Water - LIFE
Why is it important it’s a solvent??
Salutes of an organism can be dissolved
The cytosol of prokayotes and eukaryotes is mainly water
Acts as a medium for chemical reactions and transports dissolved compounds out of the cell
Water , life, transport medium
Cohesion+adhesion means water can exhibit capillary actions, this means water can rise up a narrow tube against gravity
Water, life, coolant
Helps to buffer temperature changes, important to enzymes
Ponds, water , life
Ice forms an insulating layer, aquatic organisms can survive
Surface tension is strong enough that supports small insects like pond skaters
Doesnt evaporate easily
