Q

Why is water a good solvent

A

As a polar molecule, it is able to pull a positive ion away from a negative ion, ie. the oxygen attracted the cation and the hydrogen attracts the anion

Q

Why is water’s density important in nature

A

Because water is less dense as ice, it rises to the surface of a lake and organisms can still survive beneath it

Q

Why is water’s high specific heat capacity important in nature

A

it takes a huge amount of energy to raise water’s temperature by one degree and so water temperature doesn’t fluctuate hugely, allowing organisms to have a stable habitat
