Waste water treatment Flashcards
Why do we pump our pits? How often should this be done?
- To remove heavy solids and sands that cannot be kept suspended through agitation.
- This is done annually or as needed this is done by outside contractor as it’s a permit required confined space.
Last one was October 2019
What is the purpose of the equalization tank?
• It mixes our waste water to try and balance it so the waste water is more uniform as far as PH and pollutants before sending it to the DAF.
• Helps reduce frequent chemical adjustments
Prevents spikes with chemicals.
What is the optimum pH for wastewater treatment to remove metals and proper DAF operation?
• PH 9 to 9.5
How often should pH probes be cleaned and calibrated?
Daily
What are the staffing requirements for a location who has pretreatment (DAF)?
• One operator for each 8 hours of wash alley operation
How often should the wastewater treatment system log be completed for a DAF?
• Hourly, more frequently when chemical adjustments are being made.
What are the requirements of a pretreatment operator?
• Class K site specific operator’s license
• Full understanding of the DAF system, wash alley, equalization, wastewater analysis to determine proper dosing
-jar studies
- critical checklist
- problem solving skills
• Understanding wastewater discharge permit and limits and maintain compliance at all times
• Detail and critical thinking skills
• Good housekeeping
• Accurate recordkeeping
What is the minimum clarity required to operate the treatment system in order to obtain compliance?
• 10 to 12
How do we know what the legal discharge limits are for non-hazardous sludge disposal?
• Contact the landfill where the sludge is to be disposed to determine the discharge limits that have been set by the state or contact the state directly
What categories are on a sludge manifest?
• Date of disposal, location of disposal, profile number, quantity disposed of, name of the certified special waste hauler.
We are responsible for our waste cradle to grave.
What is the importance of knowing the quantity and location of sludge disposal?
• We own all waste we generate from cradle to grave. Because of this we need to know how much and where it is disposed of. In the event of legal action, we must be able to show proof of proper disposal in accordance with applicable regulations.
What steps should you take to ensure your waste hauler is obeying all pertinent dumping laws?
• Use a licensed hauler with proof of insurance.
Have references
Get receipts for chain of custody.
Does Cintas process any hazardous materials within the wash alley? If yes, what customers?
• No however we use to process for trugreen and terminix.
Process garments for TruGreen and Terminix. The garments contain small amounts of pesticides or fertilizers. Special handling requirements are in place for SSR’s, unloaders, and washalley personnel.
What do we test our sludge for and how often should this be done?
We test for toxic materials and should be done at least once per year.
Heavy metals
Once a year- TCLP
What is necessary in order to comply with wastewater discharge?
Be in compliance with discharge limits. Have our limits Binder with wastewater permit Sludge program binder Must be within 10% variance of what we discharge per day.
