Q

What is soil separation and how do you feel it should be handled in a plant?

A
  • Soil separation is crucial to product quality and wash alley efficiency. Proper soil separation begins on the route, but unloaders have the responsibility to ensure the proper soil separation is maintained in the soil bay.
  • Unloaders should understand the different soil types and should alert a supervisor when soil separation in the field becomes a problem.

Q

In what sequence will you process your garments?

A
  • We start with our re-wash/pin repairs. Retapes and press. Then move into our batching system.
  • We use a first in, first out batching system, with 4 to 5 routes per batch. With our Wholesale routes in-between each industrial batch.

Q

What key factors will you use to determine your day-to-day schedule?

A

• Processing scheduling depends on the number of pieces that must be processed each day, as well as any re-routes or specials that might be happening. This must be known so that a plan can be made to maintain the plant on schedule.

There are five components of successful washing. What are they?

A

• Time, temperature, chemicals, mechanical action, and water quality.

Q

Who will determine whether garments will be special washed or not?

A

• Plant Manager and the SSR. Special wash requirements should be discussed to determine if special washing is appropriate, and to ensure that pricing is in place to cover the costs of special washing.

Q

You are finding out that white shirts are mixed in with the color shirts. What steps would you use to eliminate this problem?

A
  • Start with the wash alley attendant and work your way back to find where the problem is being generated.
  • Is the wash alley partner is mixing the product in the carts?
  • Is it being mixing in the washers.
  • Is it being mixed in the slings or unloading bay, or the wash codes entered incorrectly at the unloading bay.
  • Is it being mixed on the trucks
  • If the problem is isolated to the SSR, the Plant Manager must engage the SSR’s Service Manager to get the problem corrected.

Q

What is mechanical action? What is extraction?

A
  • Mechanical action is the agitation caused by the lift and drop. It allows the chemicals to work to remove the soil.
  • Extraction is the process of removing excess water leftover in the product before they are discharged from the washer. The speed of extraction is different for each type of product processed, and if too great it can affect quality by setting wrinkles.

Q

What is re-deposition

A

• Re-deposition occurs when dissimilar materials are washed together and the soil that was removed from one product will dirty the other product. A good example is white poly aprons washed with white cotton aprons. The soils that are removed from the cotton and suspended in the water will redeposit evenly on the dissimilar material, i.e. poly aprons.

Q

What is thermal shock

A

• Thermal shock occurs when the material is cooled down too quickly.” Thermal shock will set wrinkles in the garment that can only be removed by rewashing the garments on a shock formula which raises the temperature of the garments then gradually cools them down in a series of progressive rinses using tempered water.

Q

What is overload

A

• Overloading will not allow the proper mechanical action, or chemical action to take place and will prevent the soil from being removed from the goods.

Q

What is cool down?

A

• Cool down prevents clean bulk from going into the carts too hot and possibly causing spontaneous combustion.

Q

Your water usage in your plant is running three gallons/pound of garments processed. Do you agree that three gallons/pound is excessive? If so, what steps would you take to find the problem?

A

• Typical usage is below 2 gallons/pound. First investigate for under loading. Second, investigate for faulty drain valves, bypass valves, leaky pipe connections or leaking tanks, etc.

17
Q

Your total chemical cost in your plant is running .5% of rental sales. Do you feel this normally is low or high to target average? What would your strategy be to fix this problem?

A

• .5% is low , 1% is typically good. I would expect to see quality issues at .5% and would need to work closely with the WSI to ensure that the formulas used are in line with accepted standard formulas for each soil type.
