W27-L7: Tibiofibular and ankle joints Flashcards
What are some features of the tibia?
- condyles
- tibial tuberosity
- soleal line (where soleus attaches)
- medial malleolus
What are some features of the fibula?
- Head
- Shaft
- Lateral malleolus
What is the role of the tibia and the fibula?
Tibia is for weight bearing and muscles, fibula is non weight bearing, 9 muscles attach here
What are the tibiofibular joints?
- Superior is plane synovial joint allows some gliding movement
- Inferior is fibrous joint, syndesmosis
What is the only bone that articulates with the tibia?
Talus
What is a march fracture?
2nd metatarsal fracture
What are the joints around the talus?
Above: Ankle joint
Below: Subtalar joint
In front: Midtarsal joint
Which malleous extends further down?
Lateral (on fibula)
What supports the talocrural (ankle) joint from behind?
Ligaments
In what position is the talocrural joint most stable?
Dorsiflexion as talus is wider anteriorly than in posteriorly
What are the ligaments of the ankle joint?
Medial-very strong
Lateral-commonly injured
Anterior-commonly injured
What ligament is associated with the subtalar joint?
Spring ligament
What joint is functionally paired with the subtalar joint?
talocalcaneonavicular joint
What is the sinus tarsi?
gap between subtalar and talocalcaneonavicular joint
