What is the process of growth for fetus?
Growth is NOT equal but differential across the body
What are methods to evaluate fetal growth?
Amniocentesis
CVS
Crown-rump length (CRL) via imaging: Ultrasound, CT, MRI (expensive and only one cross-section)
What happens during the fetal period?
Increase in size
Acquire functionality
What is CRL? CHL? Which one is used more often?
Crown rump length; more accurate so used more often
Crown heel length
What are factors that can affect the extent of growth of fetus?
Drug use
Malnutrition
Twinning
When and how is the earliest time fetus’s sex may be determined?
End of week 12 via ultrasound
What processes continue until birth?
Lung development and ossification
When are ovaries of female fetus developed?
Month 4, weeks 13-16 of fetal age
During what week is surfactant produced?
Week 24
When are all the major organ systems finished development by?
End of first trimester (first 3 months of pregnancy)
When can you perform amniocentesis?
After week 14 of fetal development
(Between week 15-20 of pregnancy)

When can you perform CVS?
9th week of first trimester (earlier than amniocentesis)
obtaining biopsy sample of chorionic villus material
