Volumetric Analysis Flashcards
Standard solution process
Weigh out primary standard accurately.
Dissolve in deionised water. Transfer solution and rinsings into volumetric flask.
Make up to the bottom of the meniscus of graduation mark with deionised water.
Once close add water drop wise.
Stopper and invert to ensure even concentration throughout.
Back titration process
Unknown solution will react with an excess of reagent.
The quantity of excess reagent is determined by titration with another reagent.
We can then work out how much reagent reacted with unknown solution, which we can then determine the number of moles.
What makes a substance a suitable primary standard?
If it’s soluble, has high GFM and doesn’t absorb water.
Complexometric titrations
Based on reactions in which complexes are formed.
What type of substance can a complexometric titration be used to determine the concentration of?
Metal ions
