Spectroscopy Flashcards
If light source is supplied by heated sodium chloride what happens?
Series of lines of different wavelengths and colour is produced
How can an element be identified
By its atomic emission spectra
Spectra that show energy being given out by an atom or ion are called
Atomic emission spectra
Type of spectrum when white light refracts through prism
Continuous spectrum
Type of spectrum when compound is heated and light is refracted through prism -
Line emission spectrum
Type of spectrum when white light goes through compound then refracts through prism -
Line absorption spectrum
How is absorption spectrum produced?
When radiation is directed at the sample e.g sodium, the radiation from the light is absorbed which promotes electrons to higher energy levels. The energy required to promote the electrons will be of a specific wavelength and frequency, therefore this colour of light will be left out in the spectrum.
How is atomic emission spectra produced?
High temperatures will excite electrons within the atoms promoting them to higher energy levels, as they fall back down to their original energy level photons are emitted. The photon produced will be of a specific energy relative to the distance between the energy levels that the electron fell. As such the photons produced will be observed on the discontinuous spectrum .
What is meant by a discontinuous spectrum?
A spectrum that has gaps or breaks in terms of the wavelengths of light that it contains.
Why are many lines obtained in an absorbtion/emission spectrum
Because there are many different possible jumps that the electrons can make between energy levels.
Why does an atom emission spectra have multiple lines (or why does absorption spectrum have many gaps)
Many electron transitions between different energy levels are possible.
