Volume Flashcards
Surface area of a cube?
A=6a^2
Surface area of a rectangular prism?
A=2(wl+hl+hw)
Volume of rectangular prism?
V= Lwh
Volume of cube?
V=a^3
outline the activities occurring in the volume of the cell
Cell volume dictates the amount of materials that are needed/ produced in the cytoplasm
outline the activities occurring at the surface of the cell
Cell surface area dictates the amount of exchange across the membrane
The more surface area, the more
exchange of nutrients and gases into the cell and wastes out of the cell through the cell membrane
The more volume, the more
- nutrients and gases that are need in the cell for metabolic reactions
- the more waste is produced and must leave the cell.
explain the benefits of using cubes to model the surface area and volume of a cell
Cubes can be manipulated, visualized and easily measured.
Cells are more difficult to manipulate and measure (BC of microscopic size)
Describe the relationship between cell size and the SA:V ratio of the cell
If cell size increases, the SA:V ratio decreases.
explain the limitations of using cubes to model the surface area and volume of a cell
cells are not cubic in shape.
But, relationship between SA and V is the same in both cubes and cells.
Explain why cells are often limited in size by the SA:V ratio
As a cell becomes too large,
the amount of surface area for exchange of materials through the cell is too little for the metabolic demands of the volume.
The cell will not be able to function rpoperly
List 3 adaptions of cells that maximize the SA:V ratio
1) Long extensions (as in neurons)
2) Thin, flattened shape (as in red blood cells)
3) Microvilli, as on small intestine epithelial cells
