Fluid Mosaics Flashcards
Membranes are..
“Fluid mosaics”
What is a fluid mosaic?
proteins move within layers of fluid phospholipids
What is FLUID about the phospholipid bilayer?
-Phospholipid bilayer is flexible allowing for changes in the cellular shape
What is FLUID about membrane lipids (and some proteins?
-Membrane lipids (and some proteins) can drift laterally within the membrane
What is FLUID about individual phospholipid molecules?
individual phospholipid molecules are not bonded to one another
What is FLUID about proteins in comparison to lipids?
Proteins drift move slowly than lipids
What is FLUID about some membrane proteins?
some membrane proteins are tethered to the cytoskeleton and cannot move far
Wy are membranes called a (fluid) MOSAIC??
A mosaic of proteins is embedded into the membrane
Peripheral proteins
- protein is not embedded. It is attached to one surface of the membrane
- Attach only temporarily to cell membrane and sometimes attach to integral proteins
Integral proteins
- Protein spans the entire membrane (EX: Transmembrane)
- Permanently attached to cell membrane
