Volcanos Flashcards
What is magma know as when it reaches the surface
Lava
What is a gap or a whole in the crust called
Vent
What is the pacific ring of fire
The pacific ring of fire contains almost half of the worlds active volcanos and some of the worlds major earthquakes
What does active mean give an example of an active volcano
Still regularly erupts eg mt Edna in Italy
What does dormant mean give an example of an dormant volcano
Has not erupted in years in along time but still could. Mt.st Helens in North America
What does extinct mean give an example of an extinct volcano
Has not erupted. Eg mt slemish in ireland
Name some advantages of a volcano
Tourism - people will pay to visit
Fertile soil- this is useful for a farmer growing crops because the minerals in the lava helps crops to grow
Geothermal energy- if an eruption occurred then ehat can be transformed into geothermal energy
Disadvantages of a volcano
Loss of life- the magma and lava kills
Earthquakes and tsunamis
Communication : transport and communication are blocked by lava so ambulances police or fire bragaidd can’t get in and people can’t get out
Where does the magma rise up from
The mantle
Where does lava pour through
The crater
Explain a volcano
Magma rises up from the mantle
If there is a gap or hole in the crust this is called a vent
Hot molten rock erupts from this vent and into the surface blasting material into the sky
When magma reaches the surface it’s known as lava
Lava pours through the crater and flows down the side of the cone it cools and hardens
Lava flows and ash layers build up to form a cone shaped mountain
