The Sea Flashcards
What does the size of the wave depend on
The strength of the wind
The length of the sea (FETCH)
What are the 2 types of waves
SWASH
BACKWASH
What is the SWASH
As the wave reaches the shore it breaks. This is the SWASH
It is the white foamy water that flows UP towards the beach
What is he backwash
The back was is the water that runs out of speed then flows back towards TYE SEA
What are constructive waves
COMPOSITION
Strong SWASH- transports and deposits material on beach
WEAK BACKWASH- does not carry much material back to sea
As a result they construct/add material to the beach
DIAGRAM
Destructive waves
COMPOSITION
WEAK SWASH
VERY STRONG BACKWASH- wears away and carries away material from beach
Therefore there is a lot of erosion and they destroy/destruct the coastline
Sea erosion
Hydraulic action
Air compression
Abrasion
Attrition
Hydraulic action
This is the power of the water hitting the coastline
Air compression
The waves trap air in cracks in the rocks. As the waves retreat the trapped air expands quickly and can crack the rock
Abrasion
This is when small rocks carried in the seas load are hitting against the coastline
Attrition
This is when small stones carried in the seas load are hitting against each other breaking themselves into smaller pieces
Landforms of sea erosion
Cliffs
Bays and headlands
Sea caves, sea arch, sea stack, sea stump
Blowhole
What does the sea carry in its load
Sand
Pebbles
Stones
Mud
Landforms of sea deposition
Beaches Sand dunes Sand spits Tombolo Lagoons
How are waves made up
Waves are made up because of the friction between the wind and the surface of he sea
