Mass Movement Flashcards
What is regolith
Loose material produced when rocks are weathered and eroded
What is mass movement
The movement of material down a slope
What are the two types of mass movement
Slow and fast
What re the influences of mass movement
Water content(rain) Gravity Animals overgrazing Human activity(building on the slope) The gradient of the slope(steepness) Vegetation
What are the types of slow mass movement
Soil creep
What are the types of fast mass movement
Bog bursts
Mudflows
Landslides
Avalanches
How do you identify soil creep of a landscape
Terraces from
Trees grow at an angle
Walls crack and break
Fences and poles tilt
How do bog bursts happen
In Heavy rainfall peat becomes saturated and the peat slides downslope
What do bog bursts do (distruptivly)
Block roads
Knock trees
Damage road and buildings
Pollute lakes and rivers
How do mudflows happen?
Heavy rainfall soil and regolith become saturated it starts to move downslope
AFTER A VOLCANO ERUPTS Snowy regions (mountains) ice and snow get melted into water. Meltwater mixes with soil and rock fragment and it causes a dangerous mudflow
What is the faster form of mass movement
Mudflows
What speeds can a mudflow be up to
100kmph
What are landslides
Rapid movement of unstable regolith at a steep slope
What do landslides cause (distruptivly)
Coastal erosion
Deforestation
Earthquakes
Undercutting
When did the volcano Nevada del Ruiz in Columbia erupt
13 nov 1985
