Agricultural society
Arranged marriages
A woman and a mans parents would arrange their marriage for them
Very few women owned property
This was because women did not have the same equality as men.
Women were tied to traditional roles as wife’s and mother
It had been a tradition for the mother to stay home, cook , clean and mind the children whilst the father would work and earn the money

So had many children
Very few women worked outside the home
Why might things have changed in Ireland today?
Free secondary education
From the 1960s everyone in Ireland was entitled to free secondary education. Boys and girls now had equal access and opportunities to get qualifications and participate in the workforce
Women’s liberation movement of the 1970s
This was an international movement that led to many changes in the status of women
Gender equality laws
These have given women equal status with men in the workforce
Personal and economical reasons
Women may choose to work because they want to
Cost of living has increased.
Therefore women and men might need to work to pay for all their services eg house, phone , electricity, car
Less ties to mother hood
People now plan families and do not have to have children as before to have children was a tradition
Crèches
These allow mothers to work
What was the role of women in Ireland long ago
Until the 1970s most Irish women worked in traditional roles as wives and mothers
This situation has changed dramatically over the past 40 years and many women have started to work outside the home rather than in the home
What happened when the communist party took over China x
In 1949 when they took over China the economy was still agricultural as the women had large families. As well as them being wives and mothers they worked on the fields. The government introduced the “one child policy” in 1979
Since then the country has become industrialised very rapidly as. Any American companies hire Chinese sub contractors to produce goods to order. Women are the people who work to strict deadlines to fill these orders
What a re the working conditions in China like
Mainly women from Poor families Travel far from home to. Work in cities Have to live in crowed dormitories with little privacy Work long hours for poor pay Work at dull repetitive tasks

Things such as clothes and toys which are then exported to the U.S. And Europe
