Asking why we believe what we believe (if you want to understand others you must understand yourself)

Trying to see the world the way others see it
Dominant Discourse
Un-reflexive, shorthand and ethnocentric language about others (ex: primitive, uncivilized, savages, terrorists, “colored”)
Symbolic Communication
Abstract instructions of ways to behave, ideas to believe in and values to hold to show belonging to a social network (culture)
Fieldwork
First hand gathering of information (technical meaning)

Written or filmed report on the findings of our fieldwork

feeling of being out of place creates a lot of anxiety for people

those members of that community that we depend on to help interpret their culture to us
