Vocab Ch. 16 Flashcards
extends along the bottom of the water body; Home to many invertebrates
Benthic Zones
Region ringing the edge of a water body; Rooted aquatic plants grow in this shallow part
Littoral Zone
the movement of cold, deep, often nutrient-rich water to the surface mixed layer
Upwelling
The movement of surface water to deeper depths
Downwelling
The flow of ocean water caused by changes in density.
Thermohaline Circulation
The warm phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation
El Niño
the upper layer of a body of water delineated by the depth to which enough sunlight can penetrate to permit photosynthesis.
Photic Zone
ecological realm that includes the entire ocean water column; Everything except areas near the coast and the sea floor
Pelagic
a large brown seaweed that typically has a long, tough stalk with a broad frond divided into strips.
Kelp
a ridge of rock in the sea formed by the growth and deposit of coral.
Coral Reef
where the sea meets the land, the area between high tide and low tide.
Intertidal Zone
The alternate rising and falling of the sea
Tides
an area of coastal grassland that is regularly flooded by seawater.
Salt Marshes
a tree or shrub that grows in chiefly tropical coastal swamps that are flooded at high tide.
Mangroves
algal blooms composed of phytoplankton known to naturally produce biotoxins, they can occur when certain types of microscopic algae grow quickly in water, forming visible patches that may harm the health of the environment, plants, or animals.
