Ch. 9 Test Flashcards
How is soil texture determined?
By the size of the particles.
What are the types of soil textures?
Gravel- Rough & Chunky Sand-Coarse Silt- Fine, Flour-like Clay-Very Fine, Sticky When Wet Loam-Combination of Sand, Slit, and Clay.
What is Loam a mixture of?
Sand, Silt, and Clay.
How do you improve soil texture?
Add Top Soil.
What does soil color indicate?
Composition & Soil Fertility.
What color soils are nutrient rich?
Black & Dark Brown.
What does grey, yellow, red, and green soil indicate?
Low in organic matter.
How do you improve soil?
Add fertilizer.
What does Ph indicate?
How acidic or alkaline soil is.
What is the best Ph for soil?
7
How do you improve acidic soils? Basic Soils?
Acidic- Add lime (low)
Basic- Add Sulfur (high)
What does Cation Exchange Capacity express?
A soils ability to hold cations, preventing them from leaching, making them available for plants.
What happens when soil Ph becomes lower?
Cation exchange capacity diminishes, nutrients leach away, and soil instead may supply plants with harmful aluminum ions.
What types of soil decrease cation exchange?
Acidic Soils
What are the three major plant nutrients?
Nitrogen
Phosphorus
Potassium (K)
