Vocab #7 Flashcards
Interlocking joint formed by the intersection of the two parietal bones at the midline of the skull
Sagittal suture
Interlocking joint formed at the intersection of the two parietal bones with the frontal bone, also called the frontal suture
Coronal suture
Interlocking joint formed by the intersection of temporal bones with the parietal bones
Squamous suture
Interlocking joint between the occipital bone and the parietal bones
Lambdoid suture
Anterior to the jugular Foramen on the skulls inferior aspect; through which the internal carotid artery runs, supplying blood to most of the brain
Carotid canal
Allows the optic nerve to pass to the eye
Optic canal
Neck bone suspended by ligaments; does not articulate with any other bone
Hyoid bone
The spine, formed of a number of individual bones called vertebrae and two composite bones (sacrum and coccyx)
Vertebral column
The discs of Fibrocartilage between the vertebrae
Intervertebral discs
The abnormal curvature of the spine in a anterior direction
Lordosis
The abnormal curvature of the spine in a lateral direction
Scoliosis
Hump formed by the abnormal curvature of the thoracic spine in a posterior direction
Kyphosis
Bone made up of five fused bones, forms the posterior of the pelvis
Sacrum
Three to five fused bones forming the inferior section of the spine; tall-bone
Coccyx
Breastbone; flat bone composed of the manubrium , body, and xiphoid process
Sternum
The most inferior of the three bones making up the sternum, begins as hyaline cartilage and gradual age ossifies through adulthood
Xiphoid process
Triangular bone of the pectoral girdle that articulates with the clavicle and humerus
Scapula
Long bone of the upper arm, articulates with the scapula to form the shoulder joint and the radius and ulna to form the elbow joint
Humerus
Collar bone; part of the pectoral girdle that attaches medically to the manubrium and latterly to the scapula
Clavicle
One of the eight bones of the wrist, pertaining to the wrist
Carpal
Bones of the fingers or toes
Phalanges
Lateral forearm bone, articulates with the capitulum of the humerus at the elbow and the carpals distally
Radius
Inferior bone of hip, “sit bone”
Ischium
Large flaring bone of the hip, the most superior bone of the pelvis
Ilium
Cartilaginous joint formed at the anterior of the two hip bones where the Pubis bones articulate
Pubic symphosis
A hole or opening in a bone or between body cavities
Foramen
Pertaining to the heel of the foot
Calcaneal
The junction of two of more bones, an articulation
Joint
Allows blood vessels and the large sciatic nerve to pass from the pelvis posterior into the thigh
Greater scalatic notch
Medial bone of the forearm, articulates with the trochlea of the humerus and the carpals
Ulna
