Chapter 11 Vocab Flashcards
the region of the thoracic cavity between the lungs that houses the heart
Mediastinum
Sac that encloses the heart; made up of three layers
Pericardium
Pointer part that is directed towards the left hip
Apex
Thin, glistening sheet of endothelium that lines the heart chambers
Endocardium
visceral layer of a serious membrane that lightly hugs the external surface of the heart and is actually part of the heart wall;
epicardium
the cardiac muscle layer of the heart wall
myocardium
A chamber of the heart receiving blood from the veins; superior heart chamber
Atria
discharging chambers of the heart
Ventricles
carry blood to lungs, where oxygen is picked up and carbon dioxide is unloaded
Pulmonary Arteries
Returns oxygen-rich blood to the left side of the heart from the lungs
Pulmonary Veins
the major systemic artery; arises from the left ventricle of the heart
Aorta
Crushing chest pain that results from the myocardium being deprived of oxygen
Angina Pectoris
A condition characterized by dead tossue areas in the myocardium caused by interruption of blood supply to the area
Myocardial Infaction
the contraction phase of heart activity
Systole
a period (between contractions) of relaxation of the heart during which it fills with blood
Diastole
a local decrease in blood supply
Ischemia
irregular, uncoordinated contraction of muscle cells, particularly of the heart musculature
Fibrillation
abnormal or unusual heart sounds
Heart murmurs
Occurs when pumping efficiency of the heart is reduced so that circulation is inadequate to meet tissue needs
Congestive Heart failure
a vessel that carries blood away from the heart
Arteries
Minute artery
Arterioles
extend and branch through the tissues and connect the smallest arteries
Capillaries
Minute veins
Venules
a vessel carrying blood towards the heart
Vein
