VM Principles Flashcards
What are VM workshop intervals
Tactically placed at key points in the project timeline
VM0 - pre-brief stage
VM1 - preparation stage
VM2 - concept design
What are VE workshop intervals
Tactically placed at key points in the project timeline
VE1 - across technical design and pre-construction as necessary
VE2 - across construction as necessary
What is the 40 hour VE workshop
5 main sections as below taking a day each
Information
Analysis
Creativity
Judgement
Development
Time consuming so can be difficult to schedule with relevant key stakeholders
What does VM do
Connects the procuring client’s business strategy to the (possible) construction project
Two types of value
Objective - focused on product
Subjective - focused on product and person
What are the two types of human values
Terminal values - beliefs and attitudes about desired end states, defining how the world should be; influence project objectives
Instrumental beliefs - beliefs and attitudes about desired courses of action; influence project management
How can the client know what they want
Stakeholders need to be guided in their initial expression of sought value
VM does this
Stakeholders need to be guided in their judgement of the emerging project solution
This is harder
Where is the project’s value system
In the interaction between the different disciplines and the perceptions of those at different levels
What is satisficing
Decide on and pursue a course of action that will satisfy the minimum requirements necessary to achieve a particular goal
Relevant to VM more so than VE
Every stakeholder must support the workshop outcomes to act upon them
Every stakeholder must see others comprising for them to reciprocate
End result is every stakeholder being satisfied sufficiently to support the outcome but not being completely individually satisfied
How can satisficing be ensured
Used structured elicitation process to stimulate debate (issues analysis, fast diagramming)
It is through debate that compromises will be made
Requires a single collective position to be formed
What is sensemaking
Cognitive process that connects new knowledge to existing understanding
Requires conscious and/or subconscious reflection
Stakeholder need sensemaking time during the discussions no analysis present in VM workshops
How are stakeholders classified
By their power, legitimacy and urgency
Value manager classifies stakeholders by:
Stakeholders requiring immediate attention
Stakeholders interacting with each other to influence project outcomes
Stakeholders interacting with the project to influence its outcomes
How stakeholders should be worked and engaged with given their social position
Role of VM workshops
Structured problem solving process
Carefully timed project interventions
Social forums
Objective of VM forum
To create a socially open forum in which stakeholders can comfortably and safely communicate to socially construct understanding
