Function Analysis & Fast Diagramming Flashcards
Five stages of job plan
Information
Analysis

Development
Stages continue to provide logical progression of VM workshops
Role of the job plan
Workshops must use a formal process to engage stakeholders
Workshops must create an informal setting for stakeholder engagement
What are the different types of functions
Basic function (purpose of solution)
Primary function (enabler of basic)
Secondary function (enabler of primaries)
And so on
Function analysis process
Function analysis requires a method of eliciting, reviewing, organising and understanding functions
In VE, function analysis is brainstorming activity (brainstorm functions, debate to organise)
How are functions identified
Facilitator explains the verb-noun elicitation format
Problem is reviewed to clarify it’s scope
Participants note down functions individually
What is affinity diagramming
Stakeholders work together to group similar functions
Discussion builds common understanding of logic supporting groups
What is fast diagramming
A how? v why? technique of sorting functions identified in function analysis into a logical, hierarchal order
Can be read both ways if correctly completed
Elements of fast diagram
How? (Left side)
Why? (Right side)
Needs (under why?)
Wants (bottom right below dotted line)
Horizontal dotted line (separates needs and wants)
Scope lines (define boundaries of problem within which functions sit)
Functions with logic links to enabling functions
How can fast diagrams be verified
Logic of fast diagram can be read in both directions
Process lead by facilitator
