A
- Elevates serum calcium levels
- Decreases bone resorption and demineralization

What are the two types of vit. D?
A
- Vitamin D2 = ergocalciferol (drug form)
- Vitamin D3 = cholecalciferol (produced by body in response to sunlight - shift to therapeutic use of this type)

- Hypocalcemia
- Hypoparathyroidism

What could a deficiency cause?
A
- rickets
- osteoporosis
- thought to play a role in immune disorders, cancers, diabetes

Drug Interactions

- Thiazide diuretics
- Digoxin
- Magnesium anatacids or supplements
- Orlistat
- Corticosteroids

Adverse effects
A
- None at normal doses
- Serious: hypercalcemia symptoms
( bone pain, lethargy, anorexia, nausea/vomiting, increased urination, hallucinations, dysrhythmias)

Nursing Responsibilities
A
- Assess sclera, skin pigment, bowl movements, and lab results for liver function
- Assess for adverse effects of vit. D therapy
- Monitor serum calcium, magnesium, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine, and phosphate levels
- Monitor for signs of hypercalcemia

A
- Consume dietary sources of vit. D
- Take vit. D exactly as directed
- Take w/ meals
- Report signs of excessive vit. D
- Immediatly report yellowing of skin or eyes, pale bowel movements, or darkened urine
