A
- Essential coenzyme in metabolism of carbohydrates

What does deficiency cause?
A
Beriberi syndrome –> occurs most often in US in alcoholics
Wernicke’s encephalopathy is the neurologic variant

What diagnostuc test is done to test for B1 deficiency?
A
- elevated pyruvic acid level

Adverse Effects/ Sever Adverse Effects
A
Adverse effects: excessive doses may cause feeling of warmth, sweating, weakness
Severe adverse effect (from rapid IV admin) –> hypotension, cardiovascular collapse
