What is B12 used for?
A
Used to treat deficiency due to anemia, sprue, GI pathology, tapeworms, surgery

- Pernicious anemia: lack of intestinal factor needed to absorb vit. B12 from food (supplement must be given asan injection monthly for life.)
- Megaloblastic anemia

- alcohol, neomycin –> decreased absorption

Adverse Effects

- Facial swelling
- Diarrhea
- Itching
- Rash

- Optic nerve neuropathy

A
- Educate patients that treatment for pernicious anemia will be life long
- Assess for alcohol use, malabsorption syndromes
