What does the visual analogue scale test
A
pain measurement

what type of data does the VAS gain?
A
categorical ordinal data - numerical data but within a category and subjective

what are the pros and cons to the VAS?
A
pros - cheap, easy to administer.
cons - subjective, hard to isolate to a particular pain

how to carry out test?
A
draw a 10cm line on a piece of paper. At 0cm write ‘no pain’, at 10cm write ‘worst pain imaginable’.
Ask the patient to mark on the line where they feel their pain level is at currently.
Measure from 0 to their mark in mm and record this result.
DO NOT SHOW THE PATIENT THEIR RESULT.
