Viruses Flashcards
What are 2 properties of viruses?
Acellular and non living
Acellular meaning
Containing no cell
Why are viruses non living?
Cannot reproduce independently and require a host cell
What are the 3 features of a virus?
- nucleic acids (RNA/DNA)
- capsid
- Attachment protein
What is a feature of a virus that is not always present?
External envelope
What is an example of an attachment protein?
Glycoproteins
What is the role of nucleic acids in a virus?
Code for proteins
What is the role of the capsid in a virus?
- Protection of nucleic acid from enzymes when outside host
- binds to host cell surface
- assist in penetration of host and introduction of nucleic acid
What is the role of the attachment protein?
Attach to receptors in a host cell
What is the role of the external envelope?
Glycoprotein spikes allow attachment to host
What is capsid?
A protein coat
What are symptoms of tobacco mosaic virus?
Yellow blotches/spots on leaves of plants
What is TMV transmitted by?
Aphids
What type of virus is TMV?
Naked (not enveloped) RNA virus
What shape is the virus of TMV?
Helical
