Inorganic Ions Flashcards
What do inorganic ions occur in?
Solutions like the cytoplasm and blood in varying concentrations
What are the 6 inorganic ions?
Hydrogen ions, iron ions, sodium ions, phosphate ions, magnesium ions, calcium ions
What is the role of the hydrogen ion?
- Lowers the pH of solutions and impacts enzyme and haemoglobin functions
- Role in chemiosmosis
What is the symbols of the hydrogen ion?
H+
What is the role of the iron ion?
- Found in the haem group of haemoglobin for transportation of oxygen around the body
- Haemoglobin is a large protein made up of 4 different peptides and iron in the centre
- Iron ion binds to the oxygen in the haemoglobin
- Fe2+ temporarily becomes Fe3+ when oxygen is bonded until released
What is the symbol of iron ions?
Fe2+
What is the role of sodium ions?
- Involved in co transport of glucose and amino acids
- Sodium is transported alongside glucose and amino acids across a cell membrane
- Role in generating action potentials
What is the symbol of sodium ions?
Na+
What is the role of the phosphate ions?
- Component of DNA
- Synthesis of ATP and production of phospholipids
What is the symbol for phosphate ions?
PO (3- at top) (4 at bottom)
What is the role of magnesium ions?
- Component of chlorophyll
- Needed for photosynthesis
What is the symbol for magnesium ions?
Mg2+
What is the role of calcium ions?
- Involved in ossification of the bones and teeth
- Involved in synaptic transmission
What is the symbol for calcium ions?
Ca2+
What is ossification?
The hardening of teeth and bones
