Carbohydrates Flashcards
What are isomers?
Compounds with the same molecular/chemical formula but different structural formula
What is a triose?
Any monosaccharide that contains 3 carbon atoms
What is a Pentose?
Any monosaccharide that contains 5 carbon atoms
What is a hexose?
Any monosaccharide that contains 6 carbon atoms
What elements does a carbohydrate contain?
Oxygen, carbon and hydrogen
What is glucose?
A basic monomer of carbohydrates
What is a monomer?
Atoms or small molecules that can bond together to form polymers
What is a polymer?
A large molecule made up of repeating units of monomers
What is the ratio of glucose chemical formula?
1:2:1
What are the 2 types of glucose?
Alpha glucose and beta glucose
How is alpha glucose different to beta glucose?
On an alpha glucose on C1, the hydrogen is bonded above and the hydroxide is bonded below
How is beta glucose different to alpha glucose?
On a beta glucose, on C1, the hydrogen is bonded below and the hydroxide is bonded above
What are disaccharides?
Sugars composed of 2 monosaccharides covalently bonded together by glycosidic linkage
What are monosaccharides?
The most basic forms of carbohydrates
What type of sugars are disaccharides?
Mostly reducing sugars
