Virus Flashcards
What are most viruses?
Bacteriophages (Viruses that infect bacteria)
The average half-life of a virus is?
48 hours
What plays an important role in controlling microbial communities?
Viral predation in combination with protist grazing
Half of the oceans organic matter produced by photosynthesis supports the production of what?
New heterotrophic m/so (bacteria and archaea)
What places have viruses but has little info on their role in that environment?
Plant rhizosphere (immediate soil surrounding roots)
Hot springs
Hypersaline waters
Many other extreme environments
True or False. Are many viruses strain specific?
True
What is the kill the winner hypothesis?
As a virus kills off one species another microbial species takes its place. Then another virus attacks it.
What are proviruses?
Viruses that have integrated their genome into their host cells genome and are replicated with the host.
Is the bacteria vibrio cholera a human pathogen?
It is not a human pathogen until they are infected with a a provirus carrying the cholera toxin.
Can viruses move ecologiaclly important genes from host to host?
Yes
Can viruses move genetic material between ecosystems.
Yes. Plant viruses can travel via seeds(consumed with food) in the human gut. When defecation occurs the virus escapes.
