Cells: Osmosis Flashcards
What does osmosis involve?
The diffusion of water through a membrane.
Does the membrane in osmosis need to be living?
No. The membrane can be artificial e.g. cellophane
During osmosis the membrane must be what?
Permeable to water.
What happens when a concentrated solution is separated from a dilute solution by a suitable membrane?
Water will pass from the dilute to the concentrated solution.
What is selectively permeable mean?
When the membrane allows only molecules of a certain size to diffuse through it.
True or False. If the cell call freely permeable to water?
True
If there is water outside a plant cell what will happen?
It will diffuse through osmosis into the vacuole.
What happens to the vacuole during osmosis?
The vacuole will expand, pushing the cytoplasm outwards against the cell wall.
Can the cellulose cell stretch?
No.
The pressure of the vacuole against the cell wall makes it what?
Very firm.
What happens if a plant cell is turgid?
The plant will be firm and upright and the leaves will be expanded.
What happens if the concentration of the cell sap is greater in one cell then its neighbor?
Water will pass by osmosis from the less concentrated to the more concentrated.
What does cell division cause?
Increase in the number of cells.
What is cell expansion?
The increase of the size of the cell
True or False. Cell division followed by cell expansion causes growth?
True.
