Cells: Diffusion Flashcards
What are sub-microscopic particles called?
Molecules
Can molecules move through gases, liquids and solids?
Molecules move freely through gases. they can moved in liquids and in solids molecules are more or less stationary.
The random movements of molecules through gas makes the molecules what?
Unevenly distributed.
The result of random movement of molecules of a gas is what?
Diffusion
How can a substance leave and enter cells?
Diffusion
If a substance is more concentrated outside of a cell what will happen?
The molecules will tend to diffuse into the cell
If a substance is more concentrated inside the cell than outside what happens?
The molecules will tend to diffuse out of the cell
What is a diffusion gradient?
When the molecules are more densely pack on one side and they will diffuse into the other side.Left to right or inside to outside.
What is the diffusion of oxygen into a cell?
The concentration of oxygen molecules is greater outside the cell. So the oxygen molecules diffuse into the cell. C02 is greater inside the cell than outside so it will diffuse out.
During respiration is the concentration of oxygen inside the cell lower or higher than the outside?
Lower because the cell us using up oxygen during respiration.
What would happen if all kinds of substance could diffuse into a cell?
Poisonous substance could diffuse in and kill the cell
What would happen if all the substance in a cell could diffuse out?
The cell would lose essential substances needed to keep the cell alive.
True or false. Is diffusion effective only over short distances?
True.
Can humans obtain oxygen through diffusion through the skin?
No, there are too many layers of cells for diffusion to be fast enough.
How does diffusion of oxygen take place for fish?
Through the surface of the gills.
