Cell division and cell specialization Flashcards
1
Q
How do plant and animal cells reproduce themselves?
A
Division.
2
Q
Steps of cell division in plants.
A
- A plant ready to divide has a large nucleus, dense cytoplasm and no vacuole.
- A line of cytoplasm in the middle of the cell starts to form a new boundary between the cells. (The nucleus divides first and a new cell wall forms.)
- One of the new cells enlarges and vacuoles appear in the cytoplasm. Each cell contributes to a new cellulose wall on each side of the boundary.
- The vacuoles begin to join up and absorb water cause the cell to expand.
- Vacuole formation is now complete and the cell is fully expanded.(The pressure of the vacuole has forced the cell to expand.)
3
Q
What are chromosomes?
A
Thread-like structures which are always present in the cells but only become apparent at division. Containing “instructions” which control what the cell will be.
4
Q
Steps of cell division in animal cells.
A
1, The nucleus divides first.
- The cytoplasm pinches off between the nuclei.
- Cell division is complete.
5
Q
Do animal cells have a cell wall?
A
No.
6
Q
Once cells develop into a muscle can they divide again?
A
No.
