Virology/Microbiology Flashcards
What is the enzyme called which makes mRNA?
DNA dependent RNA polymerase
can be host DNA or viral DNA
What are the 7 classes of viral genome?
dsDNA gapped dsDNA ssDNA dsRNA ss (+) RNA ss (-) RNA ss (+) RNA with DNA intermediate
What does the enzyme reverse transcriptase do?
Converts RNA into dsDNA. This dsDNA then forms part of the host DNA.
Gram positive cocci include?
Staph
- S. aureus/S epidermidis/CONS
Strep
- GAS (pyogenes)/GBS/GDS (enterococcus fecalis)/Group E onwards
Gram negative cocci?
Neisseria (Gonococcus/meningitidis)
Gram positive rods?
Diphtheria
Listeria
Others (Norcardia, bacillus, clostridia, mycobacteria)
Which bacteria appear blue on gram stain?
gram positive bacteria (cell wall able to take up gram stain)
How do “lytic” viruses work?
kill host cell at release (polio, influenzae)
How is bacterial replication described?
binary fission
How do viruses replicate?
All viruses prodcue mRNA which is translated by host ribosomes. Host machinery then replicates virus (viruses cannot replicate without a host)
