Viral Pathogenesis Flashcards
LO 1. Explain the effects of tissue tropism, virulence, and the host responses on the nature of viral disease.
Tropism: certain viruses have affinity for certain tissues (access, receptors, genes, host defenses present)
LO 2. Compare/contrast acute local disease vs. acute systemic disease in incubation periods, virus shedding and transmission, host responses, and likelihood of re-infection.
local = 1-3 days incubation, shedding from site of infection, IgA, short-term immunity only systemic= 10-21 days incubation, shedding from multiple and/or distant sites, IgG and IgA, lifelong immunity
LO 3. Describe the expected outcome of viral infection and disease in a healthy host vs. an immune-compromised host, including symptoms, shedding and transmission, and length of primary infection.
healthy =
immunocompromised =
LO 4. Detail 2 differences btw persistent and latent infection.
persistent = lasts for longer periods of time, may be result of 1a infection that was not cleared latent = substantial periods of time in which the host produces no detectable virus
LO 5. List the potential outcomes and types of viral diseases with contributing factors.
- acute local
- acute systemic
- chronic/persistent
- latent
- slow/progressive
