What is cross-platform play? When was it introduced in Minecraft?
The “Better Together” update in 2017 introduced cross-platform into Minecraft.
Cross-platform play allows people to play Minecraft together (by joining each other’s worlds) across different platforms, including on mobile, Xbox, PC and PlayStation. This meant that someone playing on mobile could connect with their friend on Xbox and play together.
This update encouraged more people to play Minecraft as before, the idea of having a different console than your friend and therefore not being able to play together was very off-putting.
What are Minecraft mods?
Minecraft mods are modifications that players can use to create their own custom items in-game. Anyone can modify the game using Java (a multi-platform programming language) which allows them to create their own custom items such as custom tools, food, armour, textures and mobs.
What is Minecraft Realms?
Realms is an official subscription-based server hosting service hosted by Mojang. The service allows players to create and manage their own private Minecraft servers which they can then share an invite with their friends to be able to play together.
A Realms subscription costs $3.99/month for Bedrock Edition and $7.99/month for Java Edition. Subscriptions can be paid automatically every 30 days or manually for 30-day, 90-day or 180-day packages. A 30 day free trial is also available for new customers.
What is the advantage of hosting a private server on Minecraft Realms rather than a public one on the Internet?
The advantage of hosting a server on Realms rather than on the Internet is that with Realms, people can only join the server via invite whereas with a public online server anyone can join. This is especially dangerous for children who could end up speaking to strangers online. Realms is a safe way for children to play on servers with their friends without having to worry about strangers joining.
Realms also provides players with minigames, adventure maps and pre-built world templates which are made by community map makers.
