Q

How does R1BS use social media in order to reach their young audience?

A

R1BS uploads content in the form of short funny clips and photos via the BBC Radio 1 Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and TikTok accounts. They upload this content in order to appeal to their tech-savvy audience who are more interested in social media/being online than they are tuning into the radio show.

16
Q

What does the BBC’s license fee cover?

A

It covers the production of TV shows, radio and online content as well as development of new ways to deliver these services to the audience.

17
Q

Who regulated the BBC before 2017?

A

The BBC regulated themselves via their internal regulatory body BBC World Service

18
Q

How does R1BS target and maintain its audience?

A

They primarily play mainstream music that is popular on TikTok (PinkPantheress)

They have celebrity guests which are popular with young people (KSI)

They have social media accounts to upload media from the radio show which encourages audiences to engage and interact online

19
Q

Which radio stations are R1BS’s competition?

A

Commercial radio stations such as Capital FM, Kiss Radio and Heart Radio

20
Q

Why is R1BS struggling to gain recognition as a PSB?

A

The young target audience find it difficult to engage with the outdated medium of radio

Due to the rise of (free) music streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music, audiences are less inclined to pay the £159 license fee

Modern younger audiences prefer streaming services because they can play the music they want, for how long they want, whenever they want (on demand)

Not all people are interested in mainstream pop music and therefore do not want to listen to R1BS

Not all people are interested in the compulsory news segment (Newsbeat; the BBC’s remit states that they have a responsibility to educate and inform audiences) and therefore they would rather use Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube to listen to music
