Vestibular Schwannoma Flashcards
vestibular schwannoma
benign subarachnoid tumours that arise from the superior vestibular nerve (CNVIII) Schwann cell layer
describe the course of vestibular schwannoma
typically indolent and benign
sporadic
unilateral
schwann cell layer function
forms the myelin sheath on nerves in the PNS
(oligodendrocytes produce myelin in the CNS)
how does vestibular schwannoma cause problems
it behaves as a space occupying lesion
gender distribution of vestibular schwannoma
equal
the patient in vestibular schwannoma
progressive ipsilateral tinnitus ± unilateral sensorineural deafness (due to cochlear nerve compression) ± vertigo
how can vestibular schwannoma effect the cranial nerves
SOL
- mainly: CNV compression can cause facial numbness and tingling
- CNVII compression causes facial paralysis
- CNVI also at risk of compression
investigation of vestibular schwannoma
CT or MRI
