Vessels of Head and Neck Flashcards
1st three branches of subclavian a.
- Vertebral a.
- Thyrocervical trunk
- Dorsal scapular a.
Thyrocervical trunk
- Suprascapular a.: heading laterally.
- transverse cervical a.: heading superolaterally
- Inferior thyroid a.: heading superomedially
2 branches of subclavian v.
Internal jugular, brachiocephalic
External jugular v. 1st 2 branches
posterior auricular v.: heading superoposteriorly, behind auricle
Posterior div. of retromandubular v.: heading superiorly in front of auricle
Superficial cervical lymph nodes
sit along the external jugular
Carotid sheath: Contents, Anterior, Posterior relationships
carotid arteries, vagus, internal jugular.
Sitting anteriorly: Ansa cervicalis
Posteriorly: sympathetic trunk
External Carotid Artery Branches
- superior thyroid: heading inferomedially to thyroid
- Ascending pharyngeal: small, upper pharynx, heading superiorly
- lingual: heading medially under digastric to tongue
- Facial: heading medially to the face
- Occipital: heading posteriorly to skin on posterior head
- Facial: heading anteromedially over mandible towards oral oriface
- Maxillary: heading into infratemporal fossa
- Superficial temporal: heading superiorly
Internal Jugular
w/in carotid sheath, lateral to common carotid
Superior and Inferior Cervical Noodes
Sit along internal jugular
Superior sagital sinus
Dural venous sinus sitting in groover for superior sagittal sinus.
On sagital plane, superior cranium
Inferior sagittal sinus
Bottom part of falx cerebri.
Straight sinus
superior and inferior saggital sinuses join straight sinus at occipital region.
Transverse sinus
along tentorum cerebelli, meets at confluence of sinus
Confluence of sinuses
meeting point of superior sagittal, inferior sagittal, straight and transverse sinuses at back of skull near occipital bone.
Sigmoid sinus
forms internal jugular vein. via jugular foramen.
Superior direction to meet with transverse sinus
Cavernous sinus
lateral to sella turcica. Important structures pass thru.
Opthalmic vein significance to cavernous sinus
infection of orbital region can travel to cavernous sinus
Great cerebral vein
emerges from confluence of sinuses bilaterally
Vertebral a.
thru transverse foramina c6-c1, thru foramen magnum
Circle of Willis from ant. to post.
Anterior cerebral a.
Ant. communicating branch
Int. carotid a. –> middle cerebral a.
posterior communicating branch
Posterior cerebral a.
Superior cerebellar a.
Anterior inferior cerebellar a. –> basilar a.
Vertebral a. –> posterior inferior cerebellar a.
Ant. spinal
Facial a. branches
superior and inferior labial
angular a. : heading towards nose superomedially
Superficial temporal a. branch
Transverse fascial heading medially
Maxillary a. branches in the face
- mental a. via mental foramen
2. Infraorbital a. (via infraorbital foramen)
Superficial veins of face
Facial v.
Superficial temporal v.
Retromandibular v.
Deep veins of the face
Drain to pterygoid plexus
maxillary v., opthalmic v, cavernous sinus, deep facial v.
Opthalmic artery
foramen, branch of, branches
Foramen: optic canal
Branch of: internal carotid
Branches:
- central a. of the retina

- eithmoidal arteries (medial
- dorsal nasal a.
Veins of orbit
superior opthalmic v., inferior opthalmic v.
Middle meningeal a.
branch in 1st part (mandibular) of maxillary a.
Splits auriculotemporal n.
Maxillary a. general branching
1st. part (Mandibular):
- Middle meningeal a. into foramen spinosum, splits auriculotemporal n.
- Inferior alveolar a. into mandibular foramen
2nd part (pterygoid part):
- deep to lateral pterygoid
- temporalis branch
- pterygoid branches
- masseter branch
- buccinator branch
3rd part (pterygopalatine):
- medial/anterior to lateral pterygoid
- branches to upper jaw
- branches to nasal cavity
- branches to palate
- branches to face
Vessels of larynx superior to glottis
superior laryngeal vessels from superior thyroid
vessels of larynx inferior to glottis
inferior laryngeal vessels from inferior thyroid
Pteryogopalatine Fossa Vessels
via pterygopalatine fossa, deep branches of maxillary a.
- infraorbital a.
- descending palatine a. : parallels greater and lesser palatine nn
- posterior nasal aa.
- sphenopalatine a. : parallels the nasopalatine n.
Blood supply to teeth
Inferior and superior alveolar aa.
Follow nerves
Vessels of the palate
Descending palatine a.
- greater palatine a. : hard palate, anastomose w/ sphenopalatine a.
