What is vertigo?
Type of ‘dizziness’ that refers to a false sensation that onself or the surrounding are moving/spinning
What are the 2 subtype causes of vertigo?
1. Central: Cerebrovascular disease MS Acoustic neuroma Cerebella tumours Intoxication
2. Peripheral Labyrinthitis Ramsay Hunt BPPV Meniere's
What are red flags for vertigo?
- Focal neurology
* Sudden onset not caused by movement
What is benign positional vertigo?
Otiliths in the semi-circular canals causing acute vertigo brought on by moving your hear
What is labrynthitis and vestibular neuritis?
Infection of the inner air, most commonly viral infection following cold. Sudden, spontaneous, severe vertigo that is not triggered or worsened by movement
What differentiates labrynthitis from vestibular neuritis?
Labrynthitis the hearing is affect but not affected in vestibular neuritis
What is the treatment of labrynthitis/vestibular neuritis?
Prochlorperazine/anti-histmine
What is meniere’s disease?
Idiopathic condition that results in unpredictable bouts of vertigo, tinnitus and transient hearing loss and a feeling of fullness in 1 ear
How is meniere’s disease managed?
- Treated with prochlorperazine/antihistamines acutely
* Betahistine for prevention
What is vertebrobasilar insufficiency?
Elderly patients who get dizzy on neck extension
