What is epiglottitis?
A
Inflammation of the epiglottis (+ soft tissues surrounding it = supraglottitis)

What are the common causes of epiglottitis now?
A
- Strep species
* HiB used to be common but since vaccine has reduced

What is the presentation of epiglottitis? Consider common signs and severe signs
A
*Variable, unpredictable and can deteriorate rapidly
Common signs:
- sore throat
- Painful swollow
- fever
- muffled voice
Severe signs:
- Resp distress
- Dysphagia
- Dysphonia
- Stridor
Other features:
- Systemic upset!!
- Ear pain
- Cervical lymphadenopathy
- Anterior neck tendernesss
- Tripod signs

A
Examine throat

How do you formally diagnose epiglottitis?
A
*Laryngoscopy is diagnostic test but should be done in theatre/environment equipped for airway management

What is the management of epiglottitis?
A
- Airway -ENT/Anaesthetics
- Broad spec IV antibiotics
- High dose IV steroid
- IV fluid resus
- Oxygen
- Nil by mouth until airway improved
- PRN adrenaline nebs
