What is the passive voice ?
The passive voice is used to say what is done to someone or something
Active Voice
Il lave la pomme (He washes the apple)
Passive Voice
La pomme est lavée (The apple is washed).
How is the passive voice formed ?
The passive voice is formed by conjugating être in the required tense and person, then combining that with the verb’s past participle.
The ending of the past participle must agree in gender and number with the noun.
Les lits sont faits. (The beds are made)
Translate from English to French :-
‘The apple is washed’ (present tense)
La pomme est lavée
(est is in the present tense.)
Translate from English to French :-
‘The apple will be washed’ (future tense)
La pomme sera lavée
(sera is in the future tense)
Translate from English to French :-
‘The apple was being washed’ (imperfect tense)
La pomme était lavée
(était is in the imperfect tense)
Translate from English to French :-
‘The apple has been washed’ (perfect tense)
La pomme a été lavée
(a été is in the perfect tense)

‘The apple had been washed’ (pluperfect tense)
La pomme avait été lavée
(avait été is in the pluperfect tense)
