Verbal Operants Flashcards
Formal Properties of Language
involve the topography of verbal response (form/structure)
Functional Properties of Language
involves the cause of the response
Topography-Based (TB) Verbal Behavior
increased strength of a distinguishable topography given some controlling variable
Selection-Based (SB) Verbal Behavior
increased control of the pointing response by a particular stimulus as a result of a different stimulus or establishing operation
Formal Descriptions of Language
- phonemes
- morphemes
- lexicon
- syntax
- grammar
- semantics
Formal Description of Language can be Accomplished by
classifying words as nouns, verbs, pronouns, prepositions, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, and articles
Theories of Language
- biological
- cognitive
- environmental
Biological Theory
language is a function of physiological processes and functions
Verbal Behavior
behavior that is reinforced through the mediation of another person’s behavior (involves social interaction between speakers and listeners)
Verbal Behavior- Technical Term
has been contrasted with quantitative as in GRE and SAT tests (includes vocal-verbal behavior and nonvocal-verbal behavior)
Unit of Analysis of Verbal Behavior
functional relation between a type of responding and the same independent variables that control nonverbal behavior
- motivating variables
- discriminative stimuli
- consequences
6 Verbal Operants
- mand
- tact
- echoic
- intraverbal
- textural
- transcription
Mand
type of verbal operant in which the form of the response is under the functional control of motivating operations (MO) and specific reinforcement
(1st verbal operant acquired by a child)
Tact
type of verbal operant in which a speaker names things and actions that the speaker has direct contact with through any of the sense modes
verbal operant under the functional control of nonverbal discriminative stimulus and it produces generalized conditioned reinforcement
Echoic
type of verbal operant that occurs when a speaker repeats the verbal behavior of another speaker
operant is controlled by a verbal discriminative stimulus that has point-to-point correspondence and formal similarity with the response
Copying a Text
type of verbal behavior in which a written verbal stimulus has point-to-point correspondence and formal similarity with a written verbal response
Intraverbal
type of verbal operant in which a speaker differentially responds to the verbal behavior of others
occurs when a verbal discriminative stimulus evokes a verbal response that does not have point-to-point correspondence with the verbal stimulus
Contributes to a Conversation
mand : repertoire allows a speaker to ask questions
tact : repertoire permits verbal behavior about an object, or event that is actually present
intraverbal : repertoire allows a speaker to answer questions and talk to about objects and events that are not physically present
Textual
operant has point-to-point correspondence but not formal similarity between the stimulus and the response product
Transcription
type of verbal behavior in which a spoken verbal stimulus controls a written, typed, or finger-spelled response
