Schedules of Reinforcement Flashcards
Schedule Effects
the distinctive rate/pattern of responding associated with a particular reinforcement schedule
Run Rate
rate of responding once the organism has resumed after reinforcement
Continuous Reinforcement (CRF)
behavior is reinforced every time it occurs
- satiation
- less resistant to extinction
Intermittent Reinforcement (INT)
behavior is sometimes reinforced
- satiation unlikely
- more resistant to extinction
Extinction (EXT)
behavior is never reinforced
Maintenance of Behavior
lasting change in behavior
(sustaining gains after termination of treatment plan)
Ratio Schedules
require a number of responses before one response produces reinforcement
Interval Schedules
require an elapse of time before a response produces reinforcement
Fixed Schedules
response ratio or the time requirement remains constant
Variable Schedules
response ratio or the time requirement can change from one reinforced response to another
Fixed Ratio (FR)
every nth target behavior is reinforced
- break and run pattern (staircase)
Ex: every 5th cup of coffee is free
Variable Ratio (VR)
on average every nth target behavior is reinforced
- looks linear (reinforced every 3rd, 5th, or X time)
Ex: slot machine / lottery tickets
Fixed Interval (FI)
fixed amount of time passes, then first occurrence of behavior is reinforced
- scallop pattern
Ex: completing assignments (has two weeks to turn it in - works on it and turns it in the day before its due)
Variable Interval (VI)
variable amount of time passes (around average), then the first occurrence of behavior is reinforced
- looks linear (reinforced every 2, 5, or X minutes)
Ex: watching shooting stars
Resistance to Extinction
refers to the length of time the organism will continue to show the target behavior without being reinforced
