Ventricles, Hemispheres, Venous Sinuses and Skull Base Flashcards
Name the ventricles of the brain
Left and right lateral
Third
Fourth
What connects the bodies of the lateral ventricles to the third ventricle?
Foramen of Munro
What connects the third and fourth ventricles?
The cerebral aqueduct of Sylvius
What are the four parts of the lateral ventricles?
Frontal horns
Body
Atrium
Temporal horns
What are the five major sinuses of the brain?
Superior sagittal Straight Right and left transverse Right and left sigmoid Cavernous
What does the sigmoid sinus lead into?
Internal Jugular
What are the causes of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis?
Infections in the mastoid or orbit
Can be due to oral contraceptive, dehydration, cancer, sepsis
More common in younger people
What are the clinical signs of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis?
Headaches in 92% of people
IC hypertension with nausea, vomiting, papilloedema(optic disk swelling), visual obscuration
What is the treatment for cerebral venous sinus thrombosis?
Anticoagulation, even if there is haemorrhagic venous infarction
What is the outcome of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis?
Usually complete recovery
Mortality 10%
What pair of major cerebral arteries pass through the foramen magnum?
The vertebral arteries
What nerves pass through the optic canals?
The optic nerves
What nerves travel through the oval foramen?
The mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve V3
What nerves pass through the foramen rotundum?
The maxillary branch of the trigeminal nerve V2
Which structures pass through the jugular foramens?
Spinal Accessory CNXI
Vagus CNX
Glossopharyngeal CNIX
The sigmoid sinuses go through this to become the two internal jugular veins - the main venous outflow tract from the brain
