Venous drainage of the thorax Flashcards
Internal thoracic veins arise from the
superior epigastric vein
Internal thoracic veins accompanies the
internal thoracic artery
Internal thoracic veins
terminate by
draining into the right and the left brachiocephalic vein
Azygos vein opens into the ______ at the level of _____
SVC
T4/5
Majority of IVC found in the
abdomen
IVC starts at the level of
L5
IVC runs through the diaphragm at
T8
IVC has a very short course in the thorax before it
actually drains into the right atrium of the heart
Forms the collateral pathway between the superior and inferior vena cava
Azygos system of veins
Drains blood from the posterior surface of the thorax and abdomen
Azygos system of veins
Azygos veins pathway
Ascend in the posterior mediastinum, passing close to the right side of the bodies of the inferior 8 thoracic vert.
Arches over the superior aspect of the root of the right lung to join the SVC
hemiazygos vein pathway
Arises on the left side, by the junction of the left subcostal and ascending lumbar vein
It ascends on the left side of the vertebral column, posterior to the thoracic aorta.
At the T9 vert. it crosses to the right, posterior to the aorta, thoracic duct and oesophagus and joins the azygos vein.
