Arterial supply of the thorax Flashcards
First part of the aorta
Ascending aorta
Ascending aorta start site
- upper portion of the base of the left ventricle
- on level of left 3rd costal cartilage
- Posterior to left half of sternum
Ascending aorta runs within
Fibrous and serous pericardium
Aortic arch is part of the aorta
between the ascending and descending aorta
Aortic arch begins and ends
at T4/5 (sternal angle)
Aortic arch has three major branches
- Brachiocephalic trunk (largest)
- L common carotid
- L subclavian
- Brachiocephalic trunk (largest)
To the right and slightly anterior to other 2 branches
Ascend together
Left common carotid and left subclavian artery
Descending thoracic aorta begins
at T4/5 on the left
Descending thoracic aorta descends
- on left side of vertebral bodies
- posterior to the root of the left lung
Descending thoracic aorta goes through the diaphragm
In the aortic hiatus
- T12
Descending thoracic aorta branches
- Pericardial artery
- Bronchial artery
- oesophageal artery
- mediastinal artery
- Posterior intercostal artery
- Subcostal artery
- Superior phrenic artery
Internal thoracic artery arises
in the root of the neck from the inferior surface of the first part of the subclavian arteries
Internal thoracic artery descends
- into the thorax
- posterior to the clavicle and first costal cartilage
- Descends on the internal surfaces of the thorax, slightly lateral to the sternum and posterior to the upper 6 costal cartilages
After descending past the second costal cartilage, the internal thoracic arteries
run anterior to the transversus thoracic muscles
internal thoracic arteries terminate
- in the 6th intercostal space
- by dividing into the:
Superior epigastric artery
Musculophrenic artery
internal thoracic arteries also directly give rise to
The anterior intercostal arteries of the sup. 6 intercostal spaces
